Grossmont College names new women’s soccer coach

EL CAJON – Grossmont College has hired Edwin Rodriguez Lee as its new head coach for the Griffin women’s soccer team. Rodriguez Lee brings a wealth of experience to the position, including more than a decade of coaching both overseas and in the region. He has served as the Grossmont College assistant coach for the past six years.

“This is my community,” said Rodriguez Lee, who also coaches at Granite Hills High School and has lived in El Cajon for the past 14 years. “Grossmont has a wonderful program, a beautiful field, and has been near the top of the conference for years.”

Originally from Libertyville, Illinois, Rodriguez Lee has been a head coach with the Encinitas Express, Liverpool Soccer Club (now the East County Surf), Granite Hills High School, and the Master Football Academy in Taiwan. He also served as assistant coach during the inaugural season of San Diego Parceiro, of the Women’s Professional Soccer League, in 2018.

He holds a Ph.D. in biological sciences from UC Berkeley and is also an adjunct professor of health and exercise science.

Rodriguez Lee’s first challenge as the head coach at Grossmont: putting together a team that can compete at the same level of recent Griffin squads. The Grossmont College Athletic Department is recruiting for several positions that need to be filled before the regular season begins in September. Anyone interested can email Coach Edwin at coachedwinlee@gmail.com or text / call (858) 248-2486.

“Our goal is to build a program that can sustain a high standard of excellence,” he said. “We’re looking for student athletes who are quality players on the field and quality people on campus and in their community.”
